This is Huber’s first year conducting, and says it is very different from teaching band at a school. “It’s humbling. Gets you right back to the level of the beginners,” he said. “They’re funny as can be and bring a smile to your face.” Presented by the Midland Music Teachers’ Association, the official recital starts at 7 p.m. and features numerous students playing the piano simultaneously.

Sasha was hit by a car when she was four months old and had to have her back leg amputated. The couple from Midland said that Sasha was up walking around shortly after the operation. “They adapt so fast and you don’t appreciate it until after (the amputation),” said Danielle. The Grahams said that Sasha recovered quickly and has lived a normal life for a dog that has lost a leg.

Creekers for a Cause, a program at the high school, set up and ran the carnival, along with a 50/50 raffle, a halftime shootout, a silent auction and sold bottles of Coca-Cola for to raise money for Katie, a Floyd Elementary student suffering from brain cancer. Since the original diagnosis and the subsequent doctors visits and, most recently, the chemotherapy treatments, the Johns said that community outreach has consistently poured in, including anonymous donations through the mail. “It doesn’t seem like thank you is enough,” Andrea, Katie’s mother, said. Another benefit is currently planned for Wednesday night during the Varsity wrestling match at the High School.

The accident involved a Lincoln Navigator and the tanker caused the evacuation of residents within one-half mile of the crash. Residents could choose to stay in their home if they wished as the site was cleared. Gordon Swinson, whose yard the tanker crashed in, called 911 after hearing the crash. “It sounded like a roll of thunder,” he said.
